“Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.”
Portal to the World is more than reading about a distant land. Portal to the World virtually transports the students to distant lands so they can see, feel, hear, and almost touch the cultures they are exploring. P2W was created out of necessity as global learning has evolved. It is no longer sufficient to teach vocabulary and grammar and expect children to go out into the world and be global citizens. It is so much more. It is about connecting with the world around you. What a better way to connect with cultures from around the world than by using technology and authentic global experiences.
Ms. Eshelman, founder of Portal to the World, saw this need while conducting classes through Little Linguists, Inc. Students were more engaged in the language when they were using authentic conversation models that they would use with their peers. Students loved hearing about other students their age and wanted to be able to communicate with them in a real way. Through exploration, students learned not only real language, they developed friendships around the world using technology to connect with peers in Russia, France, Spain, China, Korea and countless other countries.
Out of necessity, P2W was created. With the use of technology, P2W integrates the 5 C's of language acquisition to empower and enrich our young global citizens. Using solid pedagogy, researched game based learning, and working with linguists at Syracuse University, Portal to the World was born.
